The St. Luke's School mission promotes the personal pursuit of excellence in every aspect of school life. We believe an important component of this pursuit is a dress code for students and faculty that sets high standards and creates an environment conducive to learning. Therefore, we subscribe to, and enforce, a dress code which emphasizes pride in our community through neat and appropriate appearance at all times.
GENERAL COMMENTS REGARDING THE ABOVE PHILOSOPHY: The St. Luke’s mission promotes the personal pursuit of excellence at every level: academic, social, and athletic. One important component of this pursuit is a dress code for students and faculty alike that sets high standards and creates an environment conducive to learning. The dress code is intended to establish consistent and predictable dress standards that reflect modesty and moderation, allows for individuality and pride in oneself and reinforces the idea that appearance matters. Therefore, to promote pride in our school and in ourselves, we subscribe to, and enforce, a dress code that emphasizes neatness and appropriateness at all times.

Our school's mission statement promotes the personal pursuit of excellence at every level: academic, social, and athletic. One important component of this pursuit is a dress code for students and faculty alike that sets high standards and creates an environment conducive to learning. While we foster individuality, the dress code intends to establish consistent and predictable dress standards that reduce high fashion statements and the inevitable competition that often follows. School attire should reflect modesty and moderation at all times. In short, appearance matters. Therefore, to promote pride in our school and in ourselves, we subscribe to, and enforce, a dress code that emphasizes neatness and appropriateness at all times.
DIALOGUE ON CHANGES TO PHILOSOPHY:Put all changes in RED.
1. changed school mission statement to school's mission (chuhta)
2. I would delete "alike" in the second sentence and "In short, appearance matters." I've also attached a photo of a student from today who is "in" dress code to help keep us focused.
3. Added "While we foster individuality..." (Rodriquez) Other ideas:
pursuit of excellence
pride in ones school
seriousness
healthy self image
prepare for furture (college prep)
excellence means appearence matters
"While we foster individuality, St. Luke's feels that learning..."
"Our dress code emphasize the belief that all members of our community are engaged in a serious and important endeavor"
FOR REFERENCE:
Here is the Brunswick dress code statement.
The School enforces a dress code in the belief that high standards of dress and neatness are important and necessary in creating an orderly atmosphere conducive to learning and in fostering in each boy an awareness of his role in maintaining that atmosphere. The dress code is a valued tradition of Brunswick. Each student is expected to take pride in his own person and in the positive contribution that his care and attention to dress and appearance make to the greater school community.
The dress code, consisting of jacket, necktie, dress shirt, slacks, shoes and socks, is in force for the entire school day. Under no circumstances are beards, pony tails, earrings, jeans, shorts, Adidas-type shoes, sneakers, sandals or hiking boots to be worn. Hair should be neat and trim.
• Hats are never to be worn in the School building.
• Hair should be neat and well groomed. Extreme hairstyles have no place at Brunswick School.
• All decisions regarding appearance will be made by the Upper School Head.
On occasion, as weather dictates, minor variations in the dress code may be made. The relaxation of the dress code during the mid-year and final examination periods is a Brunswick tradition of long standing.
